Why
Why is all this stuff here?
The internet is full of incredibly talented programmers and developers, pouring countless hours into creating code, how to tutorials about code, and even enormous projects such as the CMS that runs this website. So much of it is given away for free, and it truly amazes me. I wanted to do something to give back to this community that I have learned so much from.
At this site I want to provide good design, and perhaps even a bit of advice, all for free. I want this to be available to the awesome programers that took the time to post an in depth tutorial, which eventually let me figure out the little thing I was doing wrong on some project late at night.
So what's with the name?
Mostly the name comes from the fact that I think it sounds cool, but there is a little bit of thought behind it. For one, my brother's web design / consulting company is called White Paper Designs, which if you add the 'dot com' to the end, it's seven syllables. This work here is the free 'giving back' aspect of that company, so I wanted the names to be related somehow. Also the syllable is the basis of communication, its like an atom or a building block, which is how I see the bits and pieces that I will create for the site. Little pieces that you can piece together yourself and use if you need to.
What's up with all the talking, I came here for free stuff?
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day, give him design advice and he will eat for...um...yeah. I know a bit about design, and so on top of giving away free stuff I thought I'd talk a bit about how to use it. I might get as explicit as a how to now and then, but for the most part the Design Ramblings will be largely conceptual talk. You can ignore them and just download the buttons if you like, it won't really hurt my feelings.
So you put a bunch of advice and free stuff, but is it any good?
I don't know. Maybe? I think it's worth a read or a viewing, but quality is inherently subjective. I hope it is useful to you. If you want to gauge what you think of me as a designer, here are some other sites I have worked on:
- Vlad the Vegan Vampire: a 3 times weekly comic strip.
- White Paper Designs: A small business focused on helping small business succeed on the web.
- White Light Collections: A locally owned candle company that specializes in high end products.
- Nick Gonzales Foundation: A non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds for brain tumor research and awareness.
