I’ve been seeing more and more indie books on Amazon, sadly they seem to be all in one genre. Yep, you guessed it, Paranormal Romance. Now my view on this maybe skewed, because my wife is a fan of the genre, so I’m sure I see more of it based on recommendations from books I have bought for her. That being said, I’m not seeing any standard SF/Fantasy or even self published comic/graphic novel work popping up and I buy way more that sort of thing from Amazon than the Paranormal Romance.
Is it a chicken or an egg? Are people cranking out quick novels and novellas about busty werewolves and angsty teen vamps because the genre is on fire, or is the genre on fire because that many people are genuinely interested in being bitten by their loved ones (and writing about those desires)?
I regularly joke with my wife that I should crank one out just to see if it could make some money, but I’m not sure I could even if I wanted to. Everything I’ve read, and yes I admit it – I read Twilight, I dislike and I can’t imagine putting in time and attention on something I didn’t love doing. Then again, I go to work and sit at a desk for 8 hours a day doing exactly that. My current sell out idea is Myra the Pretty Unicorn Princess. Myra is an appropriately disaffected youth with so much angst she can barely see past her nose(to be fair it is a big nose), until she meets Kiryn that is. Kiryn is a similarly disaffected youth, except male, and well…he’s a unicorn. Kiryn is on the run from the Equine Police because he stabbed another horse in a fit of anger after the palomino had the gall to mock his horn. It is love at first sight (Myra and Kiryn) and after only a week they run away together and start a specialty website together. Now that’s a happy ending folks.
