This is getting written about all over the place, so I won’t go into much detail. The Village Voice recently did up a big article asking the question of ‘Why don’t cartoonists make any money if comics are such a big deal?’ In their own article they admit that many of the cartoonists featured were not paid, rather were given exposure in exchange for the free usage.
Many are angry with the Voice for this, and I will admit that it does make me less than pleased with the paper, but even more so it makes me mad at the artists involved. This is what we all do right? Undercut one another in order to ensure our art never has any value. No one will ever get paid to do this work if there is always someone with some smattering of talent willing to give it away for free.
